Common Sense Conservatives Bring Tougher Penalties For Career Car Thieves

Ottawa, ON – Randy Hoback, Conservative Associate Shadow Minister for International Trade, introduced Private Member’s Bill C-379, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (motor vehicle theft).

Bill C-379 seeks to implement tougher penalties for repeat car thieves across Canada by bringing a mandatory minimum of three years in jail for those who have stolen a motor vehicle three times.

“After eight years of Trudeau’s soft-on-crime policies and easy bail, car theft in Canada has increased by 34%. In Toronto, car thefts are up 300% and they are up 100% in Montreal,” said MP Hoback. “Canadians feel less safe in their communities because of Trudeau’s reckless policies which keep career car thieves on the streets.”

In addition to increasing the minimum sentence in the case of a third or subsequent motor vehicle theft, Bill C-379 will provide primary consideration to the fact that the offence was committed for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a criminal organization.

“This get-rich-quick scheme for violent criminals and gangs has made Canadians less safe and is costing up to $130 extra a year in increased insurance costs. This is yet another burden on top of Trudeau’s inflationary carbon tax and reckless debt that Canadians shouldn’t have to put up with,” said MP Hoback. “Canadians deserve a government that catches car theft and puts repeat career car thieves in jail. Our common sense Conservative plan will stop car theft and bring home safer streets.”
